RESP calculator (CESG and CLB)
The government adds 20% to the first $2,500 you put in an RESP each year, up to $500, and lower-income families get more. Missed years can be caught up, $1,000 of grant per year at most, until the $7,200 lifetime cap.
Assumptions
- Basic CESG: 20% of the first $2,500 a year ($500); $500 of grant room accrues each year from birth; with carry-forward up to $1,000 a year; $7,200 lifetime (including Additional CESG).
- Additional CESG (2026): 20% on first $500 if family income ≤ $58,523; 10% if $58,523 to $117,045. It cannot be carried forward.
- CLB: $500 in the first eligible year plus $100 a year, up to $2,000; this assumes eligibility since birth and payment to age 15. Eligibility depends on family income and number of children; check Canada.ca.
- CESG is paid until the year the child turns 17; at 16 and 17 extra conditions apply (see RC4092). Contributions at start of year.
